Groundbreaking Advances in EV Sustainability with BMW, Redwood Materials and Competition Auto
At Competition Auto, we’re excited to announce some significant developments that highlight our commitment to sustainability in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. As the popularity of EVs and hybrids rises, the issue of what happens to depleted batteries has become increasingly important. We’re proud to share that we are addressing these challenges through a strategic partnership with Redwood Materials.
Transforming EV Sustainability

Recently, Competition Auto revealed its collaboration with Redwood Materials to recycle lithium-ion batteries from our electric, plug-in hybrid, and mild hybrid vehicles, including those from BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, and BMW Motorrad. This initiative not only reinforces our dedication to sustainable practices but also helps establish a comprehensive recycling ecosystem.

Redwood Materials will utilize our extensive network of nearly 700 dealerships and facilities to collect used batteries. They will recover valuable materials such as nickel, cobalt, lithium, and copper, reintegrating these resources into the battery supply chain. This innovative recycling method boasts an impressive sustainability track record, reportedly cutting energy consumption by 80%, CO2 emissions by 70%, and water usage by 80% compared to traditional methods.

Introducing Redwood Materials
Founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, a co-founder and former CTO of Tesla, Redwood Materials has built an impressive portfolio of recycling partnerships, collaborating with major automotive brands such as Tesla, Ford, GM, and Toyota, along with significant companies like Amazon.

Their facility in Reno, Nevada, is already operational, and a new site is being developed in Charleston, South Carolina, which will play a crucial role in supporting our operations in Spartanburg and Woodruff.
Our Commitment to Electric Vehicles

Competition Auto is heavily investing in electric mobility, currently offering a diverse range of electric models, including the i4, i5, i7, X5 xDrive50e, BMW 330e, 750e xDrive, XM, and the iX SUV.

These models exemplify our commitment to delivering performance and luxury while prioritizing sustainability.

Looking ahead, we’re excited about more innovations on the way, including the BMW Vision Neue Klasse. We eagerly anticipate the arrival of exciting models like the BMW i Vision Dee, as we move towards bringing more conceptual vehicles to life in the near future.
A Brighter, Greener Future
The partnership between Competition Auto and Redwood Materials represents a promising step forward for the future of electric vehicles. As EVs gain recognition as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, this collaboration tackles essential concerns around battery recycling—an area that often lacks sustainable solutions. While challenges in battery development remain, this partnership brings hope for a more sustainable automotive landscape, aligning seamlessly with our vision at Competition Auto.

We are proud to be part of a brand that not only redefines performance and luxury but also leads the way in sustainable practices. Stay tuned for more exciting updates on our journey toward a greener future!
